Smarter Data Designing Tomorrow Better Together for Communications and Utilities

Telecommunications and Utilities industries are investing heavily in new network technologies in support of ever increasing business and con­sumer demands. For Communications Service Providers (CSP) today, the world is changing fast and in exciting ways. Traditional Internet, Telephone and Television markets are shifting and diversifying, as es­tablished industry players are branching out into ad­vanced mobile communications, Over-The-Top (OTT), Internet of Things (IoT), and Cloud services. For Utilities industry, modern­ization of their grids and conventional meter replacement with web-based smart meters are the key drivers. This trend is enabling Utilities to transit real-time data, optimization of energy consumption, and faster outage detection.

Key Drivers

From the communication sector, higher bandwidth and wider coverage are seen as the key drivers, while in the Utilities, smart meter IT sys­tems and network performance and effective operations coupled with the environmental considerations are the drivers. To enable these organizations to be confident in making critical investment decisions based on this infor­mation, then they need to be confident on the data held on these networks.

Data is the Key for Plan to Build throughout Maintain and Operate

Both Telecommunications and Utilities operators are gener­ating huge amount of data by either transforming or build­ing their Networks and Information Technology Systems and Applications. Mainly, there are three different forms of data produced from these accomplishments.

1. Physical Data (PD) that is the result of planning, design, and engineering activities. The system which rep­resents this data should be accurate and up to date to ensure higher accuracy of the planning and design. The result of this data is that one can plan and design the systems and networks based on informed decisions and carry out engi­neering work effectively.

2. Logical Data (LD) which is the rational circuit in­formation that forms the end-user service layer. The logi­cal data sits on top of the physical data by correlating the physical information into intelligent streams. Logical data defines the capacity of physical network. This data also keeps talking to other Operational Support (OSS) and Business Support Systems (BSS) data perceptively.

3. Operational Data (OD) which is the outcome of day-to-day operations and records updated into the systems and networks. This data is critical for consumer on-demand operations, net­work performance and effective Service Delivery (SD). Also, this data is useful to optimize the service outages and continual consumer service improvements.

Data Accuracy is the Key

Seamless integration between all these three forms of data and maintaining integrity throughout the life-cycle of plan­ning to operate is the success for the business. Combination of physical and logical data coverage is unparalleled and enables both the communications and utilities operators to view clear advantage in planning, building and maintaining their networks, IT systems, and applications for maximum effectiveness and lowest costs. Accuracy of both physical and logical data empowers to augment the service strategies efficiently, improves the use of resources effectively, de­livers proactive and rapid services cost effectively by sim­plifying the data architecture, while building user friendly ecosystems across the life-cycle. Further, incorporating operational data with intelligent analytic systems create op­portunities for real quality of service (QoS).

There should be an effective framework formed around these various means of data to define “fit-for-purpose”.
